Wonderful Nightmare

Tempranillo | Walla Walla Valley | Stoney Vine Vineyard

A “wonderful nightmare,” how Hemingway described Spain’s Running of the Bulls, is the ultimate oxymoron: Tempranillo, grown in The Rocks District, is just that. It’s a challenge to grow here as frost can quickly cause this heat-loving grape to shut down. But when it works, it’s beautiful. Leather, yes! Tobacco, absolutely! All in harmony with the inherent Rocks District character: blood, earth, salinity and red fruit. A Tempranillo unlike any other in Washington State.

19+/20 POINTS, RAND SEALEY
Deep ruby colored, this emits intoxicating aromas of black cherry, black plum, black currant, black roses, mulberry, juniper berries, Spanish lavender and sultry incense. The flavors, as well, are dramatic, with black fruits that are infused with licorice, bittersweet chocolate, chicory coffee and Stoney Vine silt and rocks. The penetration continues on the back with macerated fruits, roasted nuts, mocha and dried cherries and currants and pencil shavings, followed by a lingering herb dusted Rioja-like sweet-dry tannin finish. The range of flavors gives it a plus.
